Extreme Cold Survival
Essential layering systems and frostbite prevention.
The key to surviving sub-zero temperatures isn't just about wearing thick clothing—it's about moisture management.

1. The Layering System
Always start with a moisture-wicking base layer. Avoid cotton at all costs, as it retains sweat and will freeze against your skin. Mid-layers should be insulating (like fleece or down), and your outer layer must be windproof and waterproof.
2. Equipment Maintenance
Batteries die incredibly fast in the cold. Keep essential electronics (like GPS units and satellite phones) inside your jacket, close to your body heat. Water bottles should be stored upside down, as ice forms at the top first—this ensures the cap doesn't freeze shut.
